SIGNS
I loved this! Scary and very suspenseful without showing hardly anything. In
fact this is my only subtle complaint. They went a little TOO far with the
less is more thing. However, it has a real feeling to it, and for that I give
it high marks. Love M. Night. Shamayan's movies. That's 3 for 3 from him. I
give this an 8/12.
ROAD TO PERDITION
I also loved this. Another of my favorite movie directors, Sam Mendez. He has
gone a bit less quirky, but not any more heartfelt and cool. Paul Newman is
great to see, but the real wow is Jude LAw, who is SO icky (in a good way) in
this, stooped and yellow teeth...a real creep...and the final result being a
VERY emotional and sad, brave, satisfying tale of a hitman who is forced to
go after his employers after his kid witnesses a hit he is involved
with...very moving. Great, Almost a classic. I give this a 9 1/2.
AMELIE
Just rented this and it's a beaut. Quirky, sexy, funny, and a killer pretty,
oddly wonderful actress in the lead role (Audrey something...lol...French).
She plays this odd girl who loves to help other people and matchmake until
she herself decides to brave her own love story...loved this movie big time.
A 9!
THIRTEEN CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ONE THING
This is a month of good reviews! Alan Arkin, Matthew McConaughey, John
Turturro, Five contemporary stories weaved together into a single tale that
examines the dramatic impact people have on one another. A winner. 9.
ET TU MAMA TAMBIEN
People loved this, but I found it a bit underwhelming, despite some very hot
sexy scenes. The story is about these two adolescent boys and a woman in her
late 20's who somehow get caught up in a sexy road trip together before
parting ways forever. Nice, and different, but ultimately sort of
uninvolving. But still good marks. I give it a 7 1/2.
AIMEE MANN Lost In Space
Great news! This month I'm reviewing 3 albums, ALL great. This one is Aimee
Mann's latest and I believe her first on her own label. This time she doesn't
get produced by the fabulous Jon Brion, however, it hardly shows, and in fact
sounds similar to his style of production with her, which shows how much
Aimee did for her own stuff. She is such a talent. Why she isn't number one,
and all these other half baked bands are is a mystery to me. Musically and
Lyrically one of the best in music business history. This album is full of
the wonderful Beatles meets modern hybrid I love so much. And a great sense
of humor and interest lyrically. Great, interesting arrangements too. My ONLY
complaint is a tiny lack of focus that keeps the songs from really sticking
in your mind in a commercial memorable sense, but it hardly matters. I give
this a strong 8 1/2.
DIXIE CHICKS Home
Very smart. They see the mess Nashville is in. They see what a huge hit the
OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU was. They remember they are basically a bluegrass
ensemble in some ways. Voila! They do a real folksy album. Almost an Allison
Krauss album (who I adore) BUT...it's GREAT!!! Not contrived as it could've
been, and great songs too. They shine. I am so in love with Natalie's voice,
and some of the playing is outstandingly brilliant. So, I also give this a
big thumbs up! A 9!
JAMES TAYLOR October Road
Last but definitely not least is James Taylor. I have NEVER seen an artist go
for 30 years and get STRONGER each album. This MAY be my favorite album of
his EVER...if not it certainly is one of his best. It's musicality and
lyrical content is so SO good it makes me feel like I should give up writing
myself. Very few people have this effect on me these days, and leave it to an
old master to do it again. BUY THIS ALBUM. Crucial. 10.
I loved Bjorks LA appearance at the Dorothy Chandler
Pavilian in September.
She played with MATMOSS, the electronica duo, and other band members,
a full Greenland Girl Choir, and an Orchestra. This concert was in support
of the newest VESPERTINE album and was not only great; it was amongst
my top 10 concerts Ive EVER seen. A 10.
THE FAB FAUX- THE WHITE ALBUM concert.
Will Lee (bassist on Letterman) and his band, albeit supplemented with
many top notch guys and gals, did the ENTIRE White Album, including Revolution
number 9, with original loops and sounds. UNBELIEVABLY ambitious. May
Pang introduced them. A GREAT night in the Bowery. A 10.

RECORD ARTISTS
(not in any order; subject to change)
DEATH PENALTY:
NO. I'm AGAINST it. Though maybe we should allow the victims families
to torture the really horrendous murderers to death, penalty free. But,
there should be public executions for junk mailers, subscription telephone
solicitors, and the "you've-won-11-million"/fake check scam
people. They must die painfully.
ABORTION: PRO CHOICE
Many people have asked me how I can be anti-death penalty yet pro-choice.
Good question. Here's my take on what must be the most un-resolvable
moral question ever asked of the human race. Basically it's a question
of which is to be respected more: a humans own body, which is,
and should be his/her own domain, and the unborn fetus, which is a life,
albeit unconscious at that early stage. It's Murder versus Personal
Freedom and Choice. Both Life and Freedom are sacred, so, what to do?
Well, my feeling is it's UNRESOLVABLE, therefore it must be the mothers
choice, who must carry the child or carry the burden of killing the
fetus. Some religions say you will go to Hell. (I don't quite believe
in Hell myself, unless you count infomercials or hangovers). So, if
Hell exists, then it's up to God punish us there, NOT our Governments.
We therefore must make the better of two bad situations and let the
mother have the choice and have her own conscience to deal with. It's
not a fun decision. But that soul (if there is a soul) will probably
have another chance anyway. And I think people who kill doctors, mothers,
and bomb abortion clinics are pretty much psychotic. How come
when we kill a fetus its murder, but when we kill a chicken its
an omelet? George Carlin
SUICIDE/LEGALIZED EUTHANASIA:
I'm FOR doctor assisted euthanasia if there's no other way to deal with
a bad situation and the patient is not just suffering from a curable
depression about an illness. Although Dr. Kevorkian may be nuts. Have
you seen his paintings? Wow.
DRUGS:
I'm generally for legalizing ALL of the basic ones...yeah you heard
me. The war against them will never be won by making criminals of people.
In fact we create a whole underworld because of the laws. Drugs will
always be around as they have throughout history. If you love and educate
your children enough, they will make the right decision and not misuse
drugs. But this "war on drugs' is even less effective than the
Vietnam war. Lets ruin the drug dealers by making them legal, and then
half of the criminals will be out of work.
PROSTITUTION:
Legalize it, tax it, and create health plans and areas where it is conducted.
Another example of something humans have always wanted throughout history.
There are lonely people, and people who don't mind doing it for money.
So why not accept the fact, make some money from it, create healthier
prostitutes, and take away the damn stigma of it. Nobody needs the guilt
for being a normal lonely horn dog! Though I myself have never...ahem,
er
of course not. But, can you make one change? Can we make them
prettier?
HOMOPHOBIA & RACISM:
This is just plain bizarre to me. How this is still around in the year
2002 is mind boggling. Lots of fake Bible people support homophobia,
and that's so misguided, so ugly, so low-IQ. At a demonstration against
hate crimes surrounding that poor boy who was beaten and dragged to
death recently, people who were "supposedly Christians", were
actually yelling he deserved it, as if all human compassion and feeling
for another human were non-existent. Really sad to witness people so
low on the food chain. Sometimes I despair for the human race, I really
do.
GUN CONTROL:
I have recently softened my ideas on this, however, not by much. I WISH
the government had never made it legal to own guns, but now it's done,
it's too late to take them away. People have been SO fucking irresponsible
with guns in this nation, one almost wishes that a benign dictator would
take over and force us all to hand them in. Some NRA people get on their
high horses and say it's in the constitution!! SO WHAT? May I remind
you all that it also said, until recently, that it was constitutional
to OWN another human being? Just in case you forgot, our forefathers
were only human. They couldn't possibly have imagined what morons we'd
become with all this foolish-ness. Maybe we're just too immature to
own guns. But if we were mature, we wouldn't need guns anyway, would
we? I think it's better in Japan, England, etc...But it may be too late
here...sad. School kids are shooting people for Christ sake. However,
if you can't totally ban em, at LEAST make a reasonable waiting period,
even at gun shows, with a thorough personality check! I WISH it was
ok and people could own whatever they want, because I am a liberal and
I hate government restrictions. I do feel uneasy that the only people
to have firearms would be the governing powers, but I am a pragmatist,
and we, the stupid people, have showed nothing but idiotic and reckless
behavior with guns. So, I wish we could take them away, but it's too
late.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING:
IF YOU'RE GONNA HAVE CHILDREN, PLEASE LOVE THEM. NURTURE THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL
GROWTH. EDUCATE THEM BETTER THAN YOU YOURSELF WERE EDUCATED, IF POSSIBLE.
DO NOT IGNORE THEM. LOVE THEM AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. BE HONEST. BE TENDER.APPRECIATE
THEM.
RELIGION:
Overall, I think the various churches have a good message, but also,
it seems many people are scared of dying (who isn't?), and I think they
become desperate enough to latch on to anything to get away from fear
of the unknown. So, they invent father like God. Also, organized religion
tends to corrupt from within, so most organized religions arent
really doing very well by people in my book. Many people think I'm Jewish,
but I'm not, at least not by the official standard (Mom's not, Dad's
only part on his Dads side...and he was raised Lutheran AND VERY
lapsed.) Buddhism or related religions would be the closest thing to
a religion I could relate to. I feel is that all of creation likely
is just consciousness (an absolute consciousness) that manifests
itself outward to play and explore, and we are part of that. We are
atoms in a Universal Mind. I also believe that God has a Light/Good/Bliss
side AND a Dark/destructive/bad side. I do not believe we are separate
from God, or that there is a Satan that is separate either. There is
probably only one thing with many facets. I am also prepared to just
accept that I will never know the ultimate truth, if such a thing even
exists. READ THE COSMIC MIND by Stanislov Grov. THAT rings truest to
me, for some reason.
PSYCHOANALYSIS
It's not what people who are afraid of it, or misunderstanding of it,
say. And it's not usually a cure-all or a guarantee of happiness. But
it can be very revealing and show us a lot about ourselves, which is
always good. That creates choice in our lives.I would recommend it to
anybody, at least for a time. But there are idiots out there posing
as shrinks too, so have a care.
POLITICS
Um....I generally think the very nature of social politics is to please
as many people as possible, which is impossible without lying to at
least someone. However, in world politics it's way worse, and I find
it hard to find anyone with an IQ above 100, or any real ethics at all.
I find posturing, hypocritical moralizing and lies, mainly. And really
bad hair styles. Truth be told, eons ago I was seriously hoping that
Linda Ronstadt would be first lady with Jerry Brown as President (okay...it
was never gonna happen, ok??), but that I would then go to the White
House and do drugs or get laid in the bathroom....I loved the perverseness
or irony of that scenario. Didn't happen, obviously, and then, unfortunately,
I grew up a bit.
LIFE AFTER DEATH
If anything does happen, it's probably untranslatable. Maybe we become
Quantum Monads, to quote Goswami. If theres reincarnation, I hope
I come back way richer and better looking with a really good woman to
love. Thats about it.
THE UNIVERSE:
Infinite dimensions, universes....we live in universe number 26aß´µ,
which is one of the infinite, expanding multi-verses, and our black
holes are the birthplaces of other universes with different dimensions,
which spew out in unobservable other universe bubble big bangs. Who
knows? OK, probably we have at least 11 dimensions in our universe and
one time dimension, most of which are curled up in calabi yua shapes
on the quantum level. Read THE ELEGANT UNIVERSE. I believe in String
theory/M-Theory, at least for now. There is only one thing that exists:
absolute consciousness playing and exploring by manifesting. There is
no one thing that is true. It is all true.
